Arctia’s icebreaker Sisu left the icebreaker base at Katajanokka and headed to the Bay of Bothnia on Tuesday, January 31st. IB Sisu will replace IB Kontio, that has worked in the area already since December 18th. The Kontio remains in the area in operational readiness for icebreaking. The Sisu is better suited for the conditions prevailing in the area at the moment.
The advantage of Arctia’s versatile fleet is the possibility to use the special qualities of different icebreakers for different and changing conditions. “The Sisu handles constricting brash ice barriers well because of its four propellers. Although there is relatively little ice in the Gulf of Bothnia now, a four-wheel drive is exactly what is neede there now”, explains Mr. Matti Björkman, the Master of IB Sisu.
